At White Swan Foundation we are convinced that we can only achieve a transformative social change on mental health by empowering people with the right information on the subject. We are, therefore, committed to leveraging the largest knowledge pool on mental health in India that we have created to help people make informed decisions.
White Swan Foundation’s community outreach program aims at taking this knowledge on mental health and wellbeing to the people. By engaging with the members of the communities to understand their knowledge needs and information consumption trends, we tailor our outreach program for each of them. Using innovative communication methods, we employ participatory models to ensure that members not only absorb the critical information on the subject but also put those lessons into practice.
White Swan Foundation collaborates with a range of mental health professionals to impart the right information to the community members. So far, we have reached out to more than 1,000 people, giving them information on mental health through a range of communication products – from classroom sessions and communication campaigns for students, training/workshops for college teachers to discussions with Anganwadi teachers.
Our community outreach program can be of use to any community or a group of like-minded people. We are taking our program to college students, school and college teachers, parents, general physicians, resident welfare associations and so on. If you are keen to champion the cause of empowering members of your community with right knowledge on mental health, please write to us email@example.com. We would love to collaborate with you.
Our Current Outreach Initiatives
Anganwadi teachers and ASHA workers
Through various interactions with Anganwadi teachers and ASHA workers, we found that they encounter emotional distress quite often, both personally and in the community around them. They expressed a keenness on learning skills that would help them look after their own wellbeing, as well as to provide support to people in the community who are going through distress. We have created training programs that will equip these teachers and health workers to identify symptoms of mental health issues and provide emotional first aid. They will be empowered to spread awareness on mental health within their communities and help people seek timely treatment for mental health issues.
We reach out to various educational institutions in Bangalore to conduct educational sessions on mental health and wellbeing. We speak to students about the importance of mental health and wellbeing, and how they can be agents of change in helping people around them get treatment. We also engage with teachers on their role in students’ mental health and how they can play a role in early identification of their student’s distress.
We are looking to connect with communities to start the conversation on mental health. If you would like to start this conversation in your community, please reach out to us. We’re always happy to enable this movement!
